Exodus International supporters praise apology to gays - Los Angeles Times

People gathered in Irvine at the annual conference for "gay cure" group Exodus International seemed to embrace the organization's change of course after its leader apologized to gays and said the church needs to be more embracing of homosexuals.

Julie Rodgers, youth leader for Mercy Street Ministries in Dallas, said she and her organization still believe that "God only blesses sexual unions between a man and a woman," but she said it's time for the church to become a more welcoming place.

'The culture has changed, so it's not surprising that people within the church are changing," Rodgers said. adding that Christians "need to enter into a conversation with those who think differently.'

'This is definitely a sign that the church is becoming more compassionate, more gracious and more loving,' she said.

Linda and Rob Robertson, who spoke at the Exodus International conference in Irvine, said their lives were turned upside-down when their 12-year-old son came out to his parents as gay.

'If you follow Jesus, you will have to make hard choices. You will have to live a celibate life,' Linda told her son Ryan.

She said she and her husband forced him to choose between God and being a gay man, and for the next six years he tried everything possible. He went to reparative therapy with Exodus, but nothing worked.

At 18, with no answers, he became addicted to drugs, his mother said.

'We didn't intentionally, but we taught Ryan to hate himself,' Robertson said.

When Ryan hit rock bottom after his drug experimentation, his parents realized they would lose him and tried to form a more accepting relationship with him.

He went to rehab and was welcomed back into the family. But he relapsed and died of a drug overdose in his father's arms in 2009, his parents said.

Since then, the Robertsons have become advocates for gay and lesbian young adults who feel shut out by the church.

'We have to stop warring. We've got to stop fighting,' Rob Robertson said.

Aaron Harris, who works with Northpoint Ministries in Atlanta, said that he has often thought of the church as "teaching truth based on fear."

He thinks that the Exodus announcement will allow Christians to feel more comforted and loved.

'It's no longer 'I either have to choose to be a Christian or to be gay.' Before you couldn't be both and the truth is, you can be both,'� Harris said.

Exodus International President Alan Chambers apologized on Wednesday to members of the gay community for "years of undue judgment by the organization and the Christian Church as a whole.' He also said the organization would be closing.

'Exodus is an institution in the conservative Christian world, but we've ceased to be a living, breathing organism,' Chambers said in announcing the church's closure. 'For quite some time we've been imprisoned in a worldview that's neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical.'

Praise 'Yeezus': Kanye West's New Album is an Eclectic Tour de Force - Daily Beast

Kanye West's latest album, Yeezus, is bizarre, brilliant, and like nothing you've heard before.

In Paul Edwards' comprehensive tome How to Rap, the author surveyed a plethora of rap emcees'�104, to be exact'�in order to demystify the rap process. The second chapter of the book, titled 'Content Forms,' explores the role of braggadocio in rap; or more specifically, why boasting and dick-measuring is so prevalent in the genre.�

'When you're a young black male in America, you feel powerless'�you feel like you don't have a voice, you're disenfranchised'�so when you get the microphone, you wanna just pump yourself up,' claims the rapper Murs. 'I think that's where all the bravado comes from, where all the braggadocio comes from.'

Now, Kanye West is far from powerless. In a much-ballyhooed recent interview with The New York Times' Jon Caramanica, West opined that he emanated 'complete awesomeness at all times,' is 'so credible and so influential and so relevant' that he can inspire change, and is the cultural heir apparent to Steve Jobs (an odd comparison, given West's history of abusing Apple products). But West still feels powerless. He's never satisfied. And the celebrity-industrial complex is completely anathema to him. It's this queasily symbiotic relationship between celebrities and corporations that fuels much of West's ire on his sixth solo album, Yeezus, which will be released on June 18. It's a sonically audacious, fascinating work of art. And if you think his interviews are unfettered, well, you ain't heard nothing yet.

There's a line on the Yeezus track 'I Am a God' that will be quoted ad nauseum in the coming months. The track opens with glitchy lo-fi distortion and reggae crooning. Scratchy synths follow, accompanied by a resounding CLANG! and pulsing bass line. He raps about massages, Porsche's, ménage à trois', and 'pink-ass Polo's with a fuckin' backpack,' and then it comes: 'HURRY UP WITH MY DAMN CROISSANTS!' It's the 'Let them eat cake' of rap lyrics'�fitting, since West may be the Marie Antoinette of hip-hop. The line captures the intriguing paradox that is West, a mélange of petulance, bombast, unintentional'�or intentional?'�hilarity, and relentless ambition. Later in the record, there are ear-shattering synth shrieks accompanied by moments of deafening silence, as well as exasperated screaming. It is'�to borrow a West line'�the album's nucleus, and has the cumulative effect of aural stigmata.

West has described Yeezus' musical style as 'trap and drill and house,' but it sounds more like a mixture of '90s industrial rock'�think Nine Inch Nails'�and ambient-electronica, e.g. Aphex Twin. The French electronic duo Daft Punk produced four tracks on the album and if their latest LP, Random Access Memories'�a breezy ode to the funky '70s'�goes down like a smooth daiquiri, Yeezus is like jungle juice.

Opening track 'On Sight' kicks things off with a bang. Over thrashing sonic beats'�that sound eerily similar to LFO's 'Freak,' which played during the opening credits of Gaspar Noe's film Enter the Void (West had previously copied that film's title sequence in his music video for 'All of the Lights'), West raps, 'Real nigga back in the house again / Black Tim's all on your couch again / Black dick all in your spouse again.' A hazy choral interlude follows, followed by more nasty beats and acerbic lyrics. 'On Sight' is the only potential club banger on an otherwise avant garde album.

Unlike his previous solo effort, 2011's My Beautiful Dark Twisty Fantasy, this LP is devoid of radio-friendly anthems like 'All of the Lights'; there are no coquettish hooks sung by Rihanna or any other chanteuses. They've been supplanted by, say, samples of Nina Simone crooning about lynching, as on the mesmerizing six-minute track 'Blood on the Leaves,' which transforms the politically charged ballad 'Strange Fruit' from an anti-lynching tune into a vitriolic ode to a star-fucking mistress.

Yeezus sounds like nothing you've ever heard before. West started out as a producer, crafting songs like Jay-Z's 'Izzo (H.O.V.A.)' and Talib Kweli's 'Get By' before, by his own admission, becoming an overnight celebrity with Twista's 'Slow Jamz,' which he raps very slowly'�and hesitantly'�on. The production on Yeezus blows Random Access Memories out of the water. By assembling several mega-producers, including Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter, Skrillex, RZA, Rick Rubin'�who did some last-minute tinkering, West's mentor No I.D., and, of course, himself, each track is imbued with it's own thrillingly unique sonic identity, yet all ten tracks still flow together to form a cohesive whole. In an era of singles, this is an album, and must be listened to all the way through.

'Black Skinhead' contains a galloping beat layered with heavy breathing, tribal drums, CAW! sounds, and lyrics tackling racism in Middle America. It's last twenty seconds feature West grunting 'God!' The influence of Rubin is most evident on 'New Slaves.' It's a lo-fi, minimalist track that sees West going 'Bobby Boucher' on the corporate goons that have sought to exploit him, offering 'Maybach keys' in exchange for a piece of his soul. 'Fuck you and your Hampton house / I'll fuck your Hampton spouse / Came on her Hampton blouse / And in her Hampton mouth,' he shouts. The song closes with an outro sung by West and R&B crooner Frank Ocean. Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who sang on much of MBDTF, croons in auto-tune on 'Hold My Liquor,' which also features a muffled chorus by Chief Keef, and ends in a bizarre maelstrom of crescendoing guitars, thumping bass, and more nifty synth work. 'Guilt Trip,' like the majority of the album's second half, sees West sing-rapping in auto-tune, and contains the album's other most quotable line: 'Star Wars fur, yeah / I'm rockin' Chewbacca.'

The only song that doesn't quite work on the album is 'I'm in It.' With its mix of reggae, West raps, harsh, strident synths, and Vernon singing about 'star-fucking,' it's too busy and doesn't quite gel.

After nine dark, nightmarish tracks, Yeezus closes on a more positive note with the R&B/soul ballad 'Bound 2,' which must be an ode to his very pregnant love, Kim Kardashian. The song contains a sample from The Ponderosa Twins Plus One's 'Bound''�'Bound to fall in loooove''�tethered to an 'Uh-huh honey' sample from Brenda Lee's 1960 hit 'Sweet Nothin's,' along with an occasional injection of Charlie Wilson. 'One good girl is worth a thousand bitches,' West raps. After spending the majority of the album in misogynistic purgatory, it sounds like West has finally seen the light.

That being said, don't expect West to queue up for Cronuts anytime soon.

Ferrer went down on his back in delight when the match ended. He should savor his moment of triumph as long as he can. Nadal holds a 19-4 career edge over Ferrer, who has not beaten Nadal since the quarterfinals of the 2011 Australian Open. Tsonga broke Ferrer's serve to get back on serve, and he saved four break points in the 11th game of the set. But Ferrer overwhelmed him in the tiebreaker, finishing it off with a drop shot that Tsonga had no hope of reaching. By then, the rout was on.

'The plan was to try to be aggressive, to control the match, to take control of the baseline, and try to stay in the court and make him run,' Tsonga said. 'It was tough because, I mean, he defend well, and I always felt like I have to play the perfect shot to put him out of position.'

On a day when the French Open saw so many perfect shots, there were very few for Tsonga.

SOMETIMES, to achieve broad cultural immortality, it's less what you made your name in '� and much more what you put your name on.

That is why, in the wider world beyond the lab, Robert Bunsen's name burns so bright. And if anyone understands the conditions for how our culture behaves (and mutates), it's Julius Richard Petri.

For Petri, immortality is a dish best served with his invention.

As a man of science and bacteria and hygiene, Petri wrote nearly 150 papers, many emerging out of his work with tuberculosis patients. Yet the reason most of the planet knows his name nearly a century after his death is more shallow.

As 'shallow,' that is, as the classroom-common Petri dish, or 'Petri plate,' that bears his surname '� the great, thin invention that forever changed how most every lab scientist works. And to salute Petri's birth '� and the birth of his best-known contribution '� Google today features an animated Doodle of a half-dozen Petri plates. (Press play and the six dishes are swabbed by hand; then bacteria grows into the letters 'G-o-o-g-l-e.')

Before Petri came along, cultures were grown in glass tubes. In the 1880s, however, in the German lab of Robert Koch '� aka the father of modern bacteriology '� agar-based nutrient media were grown in open dishes, but placed beneath bell jars, readily leading to all matter of contamination. It was Petri, working as a military physician for Koch, who is credited with cleaning things up considerably, devising the shallow, enclosed dishes '� one slightly larger than its companion plate '� that every beginning bio-student soon grows into knowing.

Petri was born on this day in 1852, in Barmen, Germany. He would study at Berlin's Kaiser-Wilhelm Academy for Military Physicians, and then the city's Charité Hospital, before working in Koch's Imperial Health Office. Besides creating Petri plates, he also helped hone techniques for cloning bacterial colonies using agar cultures.

Petri died in 1921 in Zeitz, Germany, but his invention '� now in polystyrene form '� lives on in most every lab, just as his name does in the culture.

Happy birthday, Herr Petri.

Champions League: Bayern Munich and Arjen Robben Winner Replicated in Lego - Bleacher Report

Bayern Munich celebrated their fifth European Cup triumph on Saturday as they defeated Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Netherlands international Arjen Robben was the hero for the Bundesliga champions with his late winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Jurgen Klopp's team.

But, while the match will undoubtedly be played over and over again by the team, officials and supporters this summer, The Guardian has produced a more enterprising way of replaying the final.

The newspaper and Lego have combined to bring the final to life in animation, including all the goals and the build-up to the final of UEFA's elite tournament.

Look out for some of the features of the game such as the overview of Wembley Stadium and the big screens showing past European Cup finals in the crowd.

Mario Mandzukic's opening goal for Bayern and Ilkay Gundogan's equaliser from the penalty spot are also recreated, while Dante's high kick on Marco Reus which caused the spot-kick.

However, the real hero of the animation is Robben. Right down to Lego removing his plastic hairpiece, the former Chelsea and PSV Eindhoven player stands out in the Lego animated film.

Robben, 29, is no stranger to being recreated brick-by-brick in Lego after his winner for Bayern against Manchester United in the�quarterfinals in 2010, as this YouTube clip demonstrates.

Meanwhile, Franck Ribery also became a hero in real life to teammate Mandzukic.

The striker was celebrating as Bayern lifted the trophy at Wembley when his Champions League medal snapped off its ribbon around his neck.

But Ribery caught the medal before it was lost in the celebrations and returned it to the Croatia international.

I reviewed all the information on this site's page about this chair before purchasing(I saved screenshots). NOWHERE does it mention that this chair is bonded leather, NOT leather. If you research bonded leather, you will find that it may not contain leather at all. If it does, it's ground up and mixed with vinyl or polyurethane. The term bonded leather is bad enough. Calling it leather is clearly deceptive.

I bought this recliner for my husband for Christmas. He has a pretty labor intensive job and just had several knee surgeries so I thought this would be nice for him to come home to at the end of the long day and put his feet up. Let me tell you, he loves this chair! He hasn't sat with me on the couch since its been in our living room! Its very plush, and super comfortable. He has thanked me so many times for getting this for him. It looks great and also very easy to put together. Delivery was also great, they called and scheduled the delivery with me which was perfect! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a comfortable, well made and affordable recliner.

Don't be...I am very pleased with the chairs (I bought two). Delivered to my front door unassembled, but all it took was sliding the back into its click-lock bracket. Worked perfectly. Good chair for a good price!

This is a very comfortable chair. I have had back surgery and the support that the chair provides allows me to rest and relax for longer periods of time. The chair was easy to assemble, simply slide the brackets on the back into the slots on the base. The rocking mechanism is very quiet and the reclining process is easy and smooth.

Though I was initially sceptical with the idea of buying furniture online, especially from a manufacturer I was unfamiliar with, I took a chance anyway because of my past dealings with Amazon and their honest business practices. This chair thus far is a big winner. A nice looking solidly made piece, very well packaged and delivered on time. Assembly consisted of sliding the back down into the appropriate tracks and listening for the click, a no tool no brainer process, though you may want to wait till you have the chair in it's final resting site before completing final assembly as it's lighter and less bulky, thus easier to move in two pieces. Very comfortable and well padded with good lumbar support. I'm 6'3" and 215lbs. and it's plenty roomy. The recliner and rocker features work smoothly and noiselessly. Definitely a five star in my book.

I purchased this chair because I wanted to kick back and have a nice massage after work. I also wanted a comfy "inexpensive" leather reclining chair for my home theater. I'm happy to say that I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The chair and ottoman were pretty easy to assemble. The quality of the leather is nice and the chair is well put together for its size & structure. I haven't experienced any problems with the chair tipping over, but since the chair is not a heavy piece of furniture, I can see someone of mature years possibly having an issue. I love the fact that it's more portable than the bulkier massage chairs.The chair has a decent amount of cushion coverage to keep me relaxed while watching back-to-back movies. Of course, it doesn't have a drink holder...but adding a small table in reaching distance works just fine :-) It also has a heated area for the lower back which is nice. No adjustment to the heat setting though. There are 9 massage modes and varying intensities up to 5. I usually set the intensity to 4...which is perfect for me.

The chairs were fairly easy to put together. What a value for the money! The heat and the massage are great. We use them in our RV so they are light weight (compared to the loungers that were in here) and therefore easy to move around. Very comfortable.

The chair looks pretty nice, however you will find out is not so comfortable it can make you neck pain. So I decided to remove the content in upper side of the chair, the content is really poor quality and looks a bit dirty! But for the price you may only have that kind of chair.

Bought this chair in Nov 2012 and it has fallen apart as of the end of March 2013. Like one of the other reviewers, the welds in the bottom of the chair stand failed and the cheap thin tubes bent. Also this chair is plain uncomfortable. Its like sitting on two rocks (massagers) plus it tips over easily. Not well made at all. I plan to take my welder and fix it but went ahead and bought a RelaxZen to replace it. I experienced the Relaxzen at my local cigar shop and they are well made and comfortable.

I studied what Amazon offered in a heat/massage recliner. I always use customers' review. This one was the only one with 5 stars and I seemed to relate to the reviewer. The chair was a little challenging for me to align the back with the seat and to screw in the screws, but if I had had someone to help it would have gone faster. It wasn't that difficult, but the screws seemed to lack integrity. That said, the chair feels solid. The leather is beautiful, soft and nice to touch. It's a rich brown, not cheap looking at all. The motors are loud but I think for the massage, that is ok. There are motors between your shoulder blades, at the bottom of your shoulder blades, hips and thighs. My neck doesn't quite sit in the exact spot to get the best benefit of the top motors, but I can scooch to get a better "sit/massage." I will look for a soft narrow wide pillow to help fill that gap. I have pain in my neck and back. The motors feel nice but they are loud, not loud enough to make me that disappointed. This is the kind of chair like, when you buy a CD and you like it ok, and the more you listen to it the more you like it. I feel that it will help my posture when I have my morning coffee in it, and recline to watch tv. It's not a sink in and get lost in kind of feel of a full size recliner, but I wanted small chair, small price. The ONLY thing that disappoints me is that it doesn't fully recline but I can get pretty comfy as far back as it goes. I bought the $315 recliner here and liked it but it didn't massage/heat and it was a little small. It wouldn't stay fully reclined if I moved my legs. I have found with these cheaper chairs you will make a compromise on something. I do like both of the chairs I bought, but I stuck with this one. It takes time to know for sure. It's not that big of a deal to ship something back to try something at these prices and worth the effort, since I'm in Jackson, WY with limited shopping, no recliners that I found anywhere, so this was worth the effort/risk I'm 5'5" and this will work for even a taller person since you can move the ottoman out. There's enough head/neck room for someone a little taller, unlike the chair for $315. Hope this helps.

This chair is alright. I expected what I paid for it, and it is right on par. Not too bad for assembly; 2 pairs of hands is helpful. The "deepest" massage function is more of a tingly feeling, which was a bit of a disappointment, but if you don't like the deep digging, you would enjoy this chair. The warming function is nice, and I liken this chair to a "dry" hot tub effect.

A quality product that performs as advertised. The only short-coming is a lack of cushioning in the seat that leaves you feeling the vibration bulbs directly in your seating area. I overcame this with a cushion but that limits the usefulness of the heating function. I would recommend this product with the above disclaimer.And a side note... You can't use the heating function alone. The vibration has several settings and zones but they are always on while the unit is turned on.

I am now on my third Human Touch PC85 Perfect Chair in 2 years. The first one was replaced within a month because when you sat down it sounded like a horror film with the screeching from the back spring when you leaned back and forward. That chair has now in under 2 years broken the seat spring in multiple places like it just exploded. I called Human Touch to make warranty claim which was easy enough until they said they charge $250.00 for shipping they replacement chair since they don't service the seat spring as a replacement part. I thought I was going to be in a warranty war until I had to leave a message for a supervisor to complain about this "shipping fee". While I waited for the supervisor to call back, which they did not. I called the store where I bought it "Relax The Back" and they agreed to look into it because they are a huge vendor for Human Touch. A couple hours later the original person, not the supervisor, called back and they said my replacement chair would be at my house in 7-10 days with no shipping fee. Thank You , Relax The Back Store!!!Since then my new chair has arrived and to my surprise they have no intention of taking the broken chair back. So I, a disabled man, have to find a way of disposing of this large, heavy chair that has no use because there are no serviceable parts for it.I now wait and see if the "3rd" chair will fail as the previous 2 did. Pretty sad for a over $2000.00 product.Pretty scared to see whats in store for my future with Human Touch and their products/customer service will they say I am out of warranty in a year if this "new" replacement chair fails. Bayern Munich beat rival Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Saturday in the Champions League final, ending four years of frustration for the team in Europe's biggest tournament.

After all the heartbreak, after all the scars and curses that accompanied two losing Champions League finals in three years, this was Bayern's turn for euphoria. Little could separate two German heavyweights during a riveting game, until the very last minute. In the 89th minute, Arjen Robben drifted into the danger zone, dribbled towards goal, and pulled off an immaculately timed bluff to guide the ball past a wrong-footed Roman Weidenfeller.

For Robben, who had suffered the blow of seeing what might have been a match-winning penalty saved by Petr Cech as Bayern choked a year ago, he was infused by the most liberating of emotions. What a contrast. As the final whistle blew moments later, Bayern's joy was unconfined.

It had taken them a while to find their gears, and perhaps their recent failures niggled at them, somewhere in the back of their minds, as they took the familiar walk out onto the stage of Europe's grandest occasion some 90 minutes previously.

That allowed Dortmund to begin a full throttle. They hustled from kick off. Jurgen Klopp's busy bees were swift to intercept, slick to break, a team fueled by the infectious eagerness that had marked their route to Wembley.

Dortmund's fiery start gave them the platform to test Manuel Neuer. Inside the first quarter of an hour they forced two chances in quick succession. Robert Lewandowski took aim from distance with an audacious, swirling shot, and then Jakub Blaszczykowski applied the pressure with a snappy shot.

Marco Reus was the next to maraud towards Bayern's goal. Neuer was able to turn aside his bright effort, before making sure he handled another effort from Sven Bender. Given the amount of chances they created, the lack of their playmaking kingpin, the Bayern-bound Mario Gotze, did not seem to be overly troubling. It was a testament to the squad, and the motivational powers of coach Klopp, that they could play so vibrantly without him.

The traveling Yellow Wall - Borussia's most visibly ardent supporters - began a show of striking synchronized bouncing and noisy encouragement. Optimism abounded.

It was as if a raw nerve had been pricked. Bayern pulled themselves together to carve Borussia open. Franck Ribery sparked to life with a deft run and cross, inviting Mario Mandzukic to thump in a header. Weidenfeller needed a strong hand to tip the ball over. Bayern were well and truly awoken now, as Robben broke dangerously.

Back came Borussia. Lewandowski powered into a one-on-one duel with Neuer. In a half dominated by expert goalkeeping, Neuer spread himself to provide another exhibition of top class resistance.

The pendulum lurched again. Robben got the better of Mats Hummels, only for Weidenfeller to deny him with another critical save.

With the two goalkeepers in the ascendancy, and Germany's top two teams well matched and able to probe, the players came out after half term with the final perfectly poised. Who could be the master of invention to tilt the balance? Who might err to swing the tie?

Cometh the hour, cometh the first answer. The combination of Robben's dart into the box, and Dortmund's moment of panic at the back, gave Bayern a precious lead. The Dutch winger, who has experienced his fair share of pain in events of this magnitude, skipped towards the byline and was able to manoeuver the ball across goal from the tightest of angles. The cross ricocheted off Weidenfeller and diverted into the path of Mandzukic. The Croatian forward was able to turn the ball in, to the elation of the Bayern fans behind the goal.

Dortmund have shown enough spirit in this competition to ensure they would not be bowed. They showed admirable character to respond, and when Dante bundled into Reus, the referee Nicola Rizzoli showed no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot (but enough disinclination to decline a sending off for the Brazilian defender). Ilkay Gundogan's mix of nerve and accuracy made for a flawless penalty.

An intoxicating game again hung in the balance. Bayern were centimeters away from regaining the lead as Thomas Muller danced past Weidenfeller to poke towards an unguarded net. As Bayern's fans prepared to celebrate again, Neven Subotic made a superhuman effort to retreat in time to make a miraculous goalline clearance.

Bayern's pressing put increasing pressure on Borussia. Weidenfeller had to show his class again to beat away David Alaba's ferocious drive, and then, with the game approaching extra time, repel a thunderous shot from Sebastian Schweinsteiger.

There was nothing Weidenfeller could to when Robben arrived on the scene with a minute to go to make Bayern history and break Borussia's dreams.

It made for a momentous farewell to Bayern's coach Jupp Heynkes, who departs to make way for Pep Guardiola. The most sought after coach in European football joins a club in the rudest of health.
